Bournemouth Uni Cyber CTF 2016

Cyber

Yesterday Bournemouth University played host to a Capture the Flag (CTF) competition organised by Cyber Security Challenge UK. Teams from Bournemouth University, Bournemouth and Poole College, Plymouth University, Barton Peveril College, University of Portsmouth, Blandford Navy and Signals all participated in the CTF.

The day started with an introduction by Debbie from Cyber Security Challenge UK, after learning about some of the great things the challenge does we entered Bournemouth Uni's cyber security labs and started the CTF. Representing Bournemouth Uni I was in the team BUCSS (an acronym of Bournemouth University Cyber Security Society).

After lunch we got a interesting talk on by Raytheon's @DeathsPirate about his infosec career, we then resumed completing tasks until the CTF finished. Once it was over we got talk from BT's @autom8on who gave us insight into his work at BT. The winners were then announced, this CTF featured a lot of tasks requiring varying skill levels and knowledge required to solve them.

The Challenges

With this event being a jeopardy style CTF there were a number of tasks grouped into the categories: Crypto, Misc & Web. A couple of the challenges are shown below.

BT's Lock Pick Challenge

Unlike at most CTF's where all the tasks are completed at a computer, one of the activities was a physical challenge. Each team was shown the basics of lock picking before attempting to pick a lock in the fastest time. Team HEX achieved the fastest time of day with 3.98 seconds.
